Chainlink Clothing Press Release

by Taylor Leigh
Nov 8, 2011 at 1:26

Well, here we are...

Chainlink is a company that came to be through the love, blood, sweat, and beers for the sport we care so much about. CLC was initiated by riders that just wanted to give back to the sport that has given so much to them and those that surround them (the mtb community). We really saw this as an opportunity to create a new brand, taking a direction to help pave a new way for athletes, standing by them through thick and thin. Chainlink Clothing is a brand that is driven to change the market and to create more opportunities for athletes and friends. We truly believe in giving back to the mtb community and feel that with our experiences and goals, which we wish to achieve with Chainlink, we can truly put the rider on the forefront of opportunity and change.

We are very excited to grow with our team and you the consumer in this new and exciting time. We cannot wait to see what the future holds, so please stay in touch with us on facebook | twitter for the latest on our team and new products.

Chainlink is simply two dudes with a strong passion for the two wheeled machine. Greg Watts is a well known slayer world-wide and still continues to push the evolution of fmb. If he's not riding he can be found playing beer pong or ripping on his moto. Taylor Leigh is a semi-dirty-modern-hippy with a strong passion for both mtb and bmx, but also all mediums of art (raw-web).

bigquotesI have been a professional bike rider for basically my whole adult life, so I pretty much know the in's and out's of the bike industry. I have also been on the short end of the stick when it comes to dealing with endorsement deals and companies who may not really know much about the mountain bike scene. When I was approached by Chainlink to be a partial owner, rider, and advisor to the direction of the company I jumped on the opportunity in a heartbeat. To be able to guide the company in the direction that mountain biking is going was a big plus for me. As a rider I can fully bridge the gap between management and input from the team to better everyone. I think that is what I like the most about being involved with Chainlink, because without accurate rider input the product isn't going be to be that great. I am proud to help build the Chainlink family into something that, above all, caters to the rider rather than the rider catering to the company.- Greg Watts

So, you see...we're just like everybody else. So hit us up with any questions that you may have. But just remember, if you can't get ahold of any of the founding fathers of clc, then they are surely cracking a cold one on top of a mountain somewhere in the world. So be patient!

if they arent it's a shame... sorry but using the marketing image of a company to start a new one is rights violation and theres no point to do that IMO.

Its not only a matter of logo but of the "image". its about the font, colors (black background, blue text), simplicity and the classy image. they certainly wont be threaten in court but its not "fair"... theres so many ways of doing it, why it has to be like that.., alike crank..?!

Taylor Leigh did a great job on the site and logo design in my mind. Crank Bro's logo has a "dot" that look the same as the "dot" AKA circle in the CLC logo. Thats mind blowing to be that a circle can only come out looking one way? Other then that the CLC logo looks like a "ChainLink" and has a stand out "C" in their logo with do colour schemes that very through out their designs. I do know these guys and they have done a great job for the money they have had to work with at this time. I know they also have 4 new products in the works Riding Shorts, Gloves, riding socks, and two more Jerseys on the way. This is all called growth and it takes time Smile

In the meantime maybe check out "McDonalds and In and "Out Burger" in the states Or "Anthill Films, "A" channel or Airwalk" just examples that our mind tends to think of similar designs on a first glans, but when you break it down they are "very different".

Just my 2 cents...... and it beats supporting other companies that aren't in the MTB scene.

I agree. Their designs are pretty cool. They probably should've avoided using the same blue ink that Crank Bros use in their press release logo, but other than that they're pretty sweet designs. The one thing I'm left wondering about is how they're planning on "giving back to the community?" That's something we, in the riding community, hear quite frequently. What does that mean for them? I'd be a lot more stoked on supporting them if I knew a bit more about them rather than just how rad they are cuz they like to ride bikes a lot. Don't we all?

 Are you joking me?
CrankBrothers logo spread over a Tshirt, hoodie, and jersey with 2 graphics!
Where's the beef? I know,.. small start up company, but when you compare to this: http://www.platzangst.com/home for example...
Never heard of the company and they have 8 models of technical wear on top of everything else....
Looks like some more sweat and beers are required.

I am usually very open-minded here .........don't like to judge..........but seriously? I agree, t-shirt, hoodie and a hat? Hope there is more in the works, I don't want to see mtb go the way of bmx where every rider with a screen-press owns a "clothing company"....

flag mtaero (Nov 10, 2011 at 7:19)
I completely agree with you guys. Its a modified crank brothers logo to start. Seriously, does the graphic designer live in a box somewhere they dont know whats going on in the outside world. How is making a screen print cotton t-shirt giving back to the mtb community? How is rider input going to make a screened T better for the mtb community? Sounds like a lot of PR mumbo jumbo to me.

I know Taylor, and he is an extremely talented artist across many mediums, good rider and all around nice-guy. Cut the guy some slack, you have to start small and work your way out from there. If you don't like it, don't buy any. Simple.

flag mtaero (Nov 10, 2011 at 10:13)
Being a nice guy, talented and a good rider is all moot. You just cant release a logo that looks so close to another companies, especially within the same industry and not expect people to think you copied it. Its simple design ethics and research. Did they really not notice how similar it is? I respect that they are willing to put themselves out there, but we dont know him personally and this article is all I have to go on. Unfortunately, it comes off to the average consumer that its all ripped off.

Nice job on the clothing and website! I really like the fact that each graphic has a different color scheme. Props to Greg Watts to put his money where his mouth is and take the time to create a sick clothing company in his free time!

I am very surprised on some of the comments you guys are posting. I am wondering if you guys even went to Crank Brothers website and looked. I did http://cart.crankbrothers.com/softgoods/teeshirts.html?p=1. I see some very different designs and colors from Chain Link... I would say much more variety, the colors are much more towards the MTB community and not so dull. Also the pricing seems to be pretty similar across the board.

I dont know about you guys but when I buy a bike its from a bike shop not a bike shop that sells toys/ snuggies/ spam (ahem Walmart). Same idea here where would you buy your clothing from an MTB clothing company(Chain Link) or from a company that worries more about their peddles, skewers and tries to catch a piece of the clothing market (Crank Brothers).

As far as a business it takes a lot of time and money to jump into a something like this! Think about his competition... just about every company out their. The thing about Chain Link they are creating a MTB Brand especially for riders/ senders/ maybe spandexers. Once a brand like this becomes established in a few months they are going to be offering many more products with different graphics and color combos. Be patient its called market research they will come out with sicker products once they know what people want to buy or not. I am sure Greg Watts doesn't have $500,000 layin' around to start a clothing company. So brands usually take awhile to build themselves up especially in dire times like this. Be supportive of his accomplishments and maybe give Chain Link some constructive criticism so they can bring us all the sickest MTB clothing out their!

I dont know just an idear...

Just curious, are you comparing Crank Bros to Walmart because they sell components as well as some soft goods that represent their company? You might as well apply that statement to any MTB company that happens to sell a sweatshirt, tee shirt or any other item alongside their components, frames, etc.

As far as buying your clothes from a "clothing company" goes, does chain link actually produce their products? Or are they like most other "clothing companies" out there and are they simply buying shirts and screen printing them? Just curious. Haven't looked into them much, but I would suspect that much like every other company out there that offers a tee shirt with their logo on it, they're buying shirts elsewhere and having them screened. If that is the case, then the only thing that separates the from companies such as Crank Bros, et al. is that they do not offer components along with their shirts.

flag savinka (Nov 10, 2011 at 23:26)
More variety, the colors are much more towards the MTB community? The "link" on one of the shirts is blue, and on the other one it is yellow. The only thing these colors are more towards is Dakine's color palate. Yes Crankbrothes have a little bit of a yuppie thing going but at least they have a look unique to them.
Everyone wants to like every new MTB company that comes out but, the problem is that this is just uninspired. It's vanilla and it's nothing people haven't seen before. (CrankBrothers...just kidding Wink

I like the hats. Just checked out the store... $35 dollars for a NON FITTED New Era cap. That's mad expensive. Wouldn't a "rider owned" company know that most of us have no money, because what we get goes into our bikes? How about 25 and I can do it. Or make it fitted at least.

That’s a nice chain link symbol but too bad it’s taken already (plus or minus a few symbol lines).
How about an official Pinkbike product symbol design contest for Chain Link? That way all the PB members that feel they need to add their input to further contribute to the mountain bike community can have a go. Maybe this way we will all can be happy and be exactly where we are today; commenting on the internet and worrying about T-shirts and hats vs. riding. Epic?

This company needs a better writer. This article tried way to hard to hard hit all the right notes. At least Greg came across as authentic. Good to see another rider owned company out there, that aspect can make or break a product, and it's why a company like transition has been so successful.

same colours as Royal/ 661, similar logo to crankbrothers..... come on guys seriously need to get more imaginative
not sure it will get trademarked

"offering many more products with different graphics and color combos. Be patient its called market research they will come out with sicker products once they know what people want to buy or not"

I can give you tip off from the get go if you want to make money then 50% of your range is likely to end up being black, its the best seller by far

good luck with the venture always good to have more bike clothing

"HenryR " wow you really have strong feed back at 18 years old. Why don't you have any respect or love of the industry that they are trying to help out? The are clearly different unless you think you can copy write a circle? wait do you? lol is so great!!!!! ChainLink is very different and they ate marketing to the soft goods and not components, their is a big difference. Their logo is different in many ways and their demographic is as well. la off and see what they bring to the table. It takes time to develop a company and they have more on the way!

I'm with mbiker123 on this one. I don't think the logo looks the same, other then the circle. What is the Crank Brother logo supposed to be anyway? A Crank I'm assuming and Chain Links is a "C" with a Chain Link attached. It looks great in my books and if it helps grow the industry then I'm in!
